Note Studio
FAQ
I used Note Studio version 2. How do I upgrade?
Step 1: BACK UP YOUR CURRENT DATA!
While everything should go smoothly, it's always important to back up your old data first. That way, worst case, you can roll
back to your version 2.0.9 data.
So how do you back up your current data? Well, you need to know where it lives. See elsewhere in our FAQ for Where is my 2.0 Note Studio data actually stored?
Once you identify your data, make a copy of the entire directory. Back it up. Really, if you're serious about your 2.0 data,
you must do this first.
Step 2: Unencrypt Any Encrypted Books
To start with, please decrypt any books you have in version 2. The encryption scheme has changed slightly (to make it much
more robust), so you need to decrypt in version 2, install, and then re-encrypt your books once you're running version 3.0
Step 3: Remove Note Studio from your Palm
If you are running Note Studio for Windows, and don't have a Palm, you can skip this step. But if you're running Note Studio
on the Palm, uninstall it. Removing an application is slightly different on different devices. But in general, you can go
to the main front panel of your Palm device, activate the menu, and choose 'Delete...' from the 'App Menu'
Step 3(a): Do Not Uninstall Note Studio 2.0 on the PC.
This is more a non-step than a step. You don't need to uninstall 2.0 yet. You may as well leave it for now, until your upgrade
is successful.
Step 4: Start the Note Studio 3.0 Installation.
When you install 3.0 or later, the installer will ask if you want to upgrade your version 2 data.
- if you choose 'Yes', the data conversion will happen as part of the install process.
- if you choose 'No', the data conversion will not happen as part of the install process. But you can do the conversion yourself later by running the converter tool, which is installed automatically.
About the Note Studio converter tool
Firstly, importantly, the upgrade tool does not make any changes to your 2.0 data. It leaves your 2.0 data untouched. This means that your 2.0 data is preserved, if you ever need it later. Plus, you have
already made a backup in Step 1, right?
The converter tool reads your 2.0 data, then copies that data to a new location. Version 3.0 by default stores its data in
a different location. As the 2.0 data is copied to the new location, it is converted to the 3.0 format. Once the upgrade happens,
you have two copies of the data:
- the original 2.0 data
- the 3.0 version of the same data, to be used by Note Studio 3.0.
The converter tool allows you to upgrade the data for as many Palm users as you want. If you get any error message during
the conversion, you should email support@dogmelon.com.au, and we will work with you to fix the problems.
Step 5: Continue the Note Studio Installation.
After the converter tool is finished, the installer will continue installing Note Studio 3.0 properly. You should install Note Studio to a different directory to version 2. Eg, install it in a directory called 'Note Studio 3'.
After installation, run Note Studio. If everything has gone smoothly, you will be able to see your original 2.0 data.
Step 6: Sync Data to Palm
Again, this step only applies to Palm users.
Once you are happy with the data on the Desktop, you need to get 3.0 with the data onto your Palm. We recommend:
- Set your conduit to default to 'Desktop overwrite Handheld'. (How?)
- Sync twice with your Palm (1st to install NS3, 2nd to Sync the data)
- Set your conduit back to normal 2-way sync.

- Everything is working fine. Can I uninstall 2.0 now? Yes, once you're satisfied that 3.0 is running fine on your Palm and PC, you can uninstall 2.0 from the Desktop.
